Having been a working musician for decades and a great lover of music, I'm drawn to combine these personal passions with photography by photographing live musical performance.
This can be a challenging pursuit. Stage lighting is usually mixed, with performers frequently moving in and out of both dim and bright lights. Variable extremes of light and the erratic nature of the performers movements make image making difficult at best. Distance from the performance sometimes requires the use of long heavy lenses, prone to motion blur when shooting in low light. A very steady hand, relaxed breathing, very quick reflexes, attention to detail, and anticipation of what may happen next are all critically necessary to getting good results.
Shooting live music is a specialty in itself and there are not many practitioners that are consistency successful. Yet it is the challenge of doing this that makes it so rewarding when it works. I've posted a sampling of my live music images here. I'll post more of it over time so check back. Thanks for looking!
